A skin tag is a benign (non-cancerous) skin growth that commonly develops in areas where the skin folds or rubs together. Typical locations include the eyelids, neck, underarms, and other skin crease areas.
Skin tags are made up of fibrous tissue and small blood vessels, which means they can bleed if accidentally caught or cut. Once a skin tag has formed, it usually remains stable in size and does not continue to grow.
They are more commonly seen in middle-aged adults, particularly women, and are generally harmless. However, many people choose to have them removed for comfort or cosmetic reasons.
Skin tags are treated using precise cryotherapy to safely destroy the tissue at the base of the lesion. During treatment, the skin tag is gently stabilised, allowing the applicator to target the stem of the lesion with controlled accuracy.
The CryoPen applicator is held at a 90-degree angle, positioned approximately 4 mm above the skin, and applied directly to the base of the skin tag. A light white frost forms evenly across the treated area, followed by a small raised blister, which indicates effective treatment.
After the initial freeze, the tissue is allowed to thaw for around 30 seconds before a second freeze is applied. As the skin rewarms, mild redness may occur as part of the body’s natural inflammatory response.
Over time, the skin tag darkens from the base, dries out, and naturally falls away as the skin heals underneath. This process typically occurs over 1 to 6 weeks, depending on the size of the skin tag.
Skin tags with a clearly defined neck (pedunculated skin tags) require a more targeted cryotherapy technique to ensure effective and controlled treatment.
During the procedure, a protective barrier such as micropore tape or a wax strip is placed on one side of the skin tag to shield the surrounding skin. The skin tag is gently positioned against the barrier, and cryotherapy is applied to one side of the lesion for 5–10 seconds.
The barrier is then repositioned to the opposite side, and the process is repeated. This controlled, side-by-side approach allows the base of the skin tag to be treated thoroughly while protecting nearby healthy tissue.
Larger skin tags with a pronounced neck that do not move freely require a more structured cryotherapy approach to ensure effective treatment.
During the procedure, the skin tag is gently lifted to expose the base of the neck. Controlled cryotherapy is then applied around the base of the lesion, followed by treatment to the upper portion of the skin tag. This ensures thorough freezing of the tissue while protecting the surrounding skin.
Treatment Duration: Dependent on the size of the skin tag
Number of Sessions: Typically 2–4 treatments
Session Spacing: Approximately 4 weeks apart
