Sebaceous Hyperplasia

What Is Sebaceous Hyperplasia?

Sebaceous hyperplasia is an enlarged or herniated sebaceous (oil) gland that forms a yellow, waxy, donut-shaped lesion, most commonly on the forehead or cheeks.

These lesions are generally benign and occur more frequently in middle-aged to older adults, particularly men. While harmless, many individuals choose treatment for cosmetic reasons or to prevent irritation.

Sebaceous Hyperplasia Treatment Procedure

Begin by degreasing the lesion with a defatting solution, such as alcohol or acetone. The lesion is then treated with a direct cryotherapy application, holding the device 4 mm above the skin at a 90° angle.

A light white frost indicates effective freezing. After the first freeze, allow the tissue to thaw for 30 seconds before applying a second freeze. Mild redness may appear as part of the normal inflammatory response.

Sebaceous hyperplasia typically resolves within 14 days, leaving healthy skin underneath.
