Lentigines are pigmented skin lesions with clearly defined edges that develop as a result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They are commonly referred to as sun spots or age spots and are generally harmless.
These lesions occur when there is an increased production of pigment in the skin, leading to flat, darker patches that can vary in size and colour. Lentigines most often appear on areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
Lentigines are treated using controlled cryotherapy, where the lesion is frozen with quick, precise circular movements from approximately 4 mm above the skin. The applicator is held at a 90-degree angle to ensure even and accurate treatment.
During the procedure, a light white frost forms over the lesion, followed by a subtle shiny appearance. An effective treatment response is indicated by immediate darkening of the pigmented area. After the initial freeze, the skin is allowed to thaw for around 30 seconds before a second freeze is applied.
As the area rewarms, mild redness may occur as part of the body’s natural inflammatory response. Over the following days, the pigmentation darkens further and a dry crust forms. Lentigines typically shed within 10–14 days.
When the crust naturally falls away, the new skin underneath may appear pink and shiny. This is new skin, not scarring. At this stage, it is essential to apply a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50 or above) to protect the area and reduce the risk of pigmentation returning.
To achieve the best possible results from CryoPen treatment for lentigines, it is important to prepare the skin properly before your appointment.
In the days leading up to treatment, please follow these guidelines:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds on the treatment area
Do not apply self-tanning products for at least 7 days prior
Keep the skin clean, dry, and free from creams or makeup on the day of treatment
Do not pick, scratch, or attempt to remove the lesion yourself
Inform your practitioner of any recent skin treatments or changes
