Ephelis / Ephelides (Freckles)

What Are Ephelides (Freckles)?

Ephelides, commonly known as freckles, are small, flat pigmented spots that appear on the skin, usually during childhood, and may remain into adulthood. They can have soft or clearly defined edges and vary in colour from light brown to darker shades.

Freckles are caused by a genetic tendency combined with sun exposure, rather than a skin disease. They are most commonly seen in people with lighter skin tones, particularly Fitzpatrick Skin Type II, and typically develop on sun-exposed areas such as the face, arms, shoulders, and chest.

Ephelides are completely benign and do not pose any health risk. Some individuals choose to reduce their appearance for cosmetic reasons or to achieve a more even skin tone.

Ephelides Treatment Procedure

The treatment is performed using a precise, controlled application of advanced cryotherapy technology. The device is positioned approximately 4 mm above the skin, with the applicator held at a 90-degree angle to ensure accuracy and safety.

A gentle, even frost forms across the treated area, followed by a subtle shiny appearance. An effective treatment endpoint is identified by the immediate darkening of the pigmented spot, confirming successful targeting of the lesion.

After the initial freeze, the tissue is allowed to thaw naturally for around 30 seconds, before a second freeze is applied to enhance treatment effectiveness. Once thawed, the area may appear slightly red, which is a normal inflammatory response as the skin begins its natural healing process.

Ephelides typically clear within 10 to 14 days following treatment. As healing progresses, the treated pigment fades away, revealing fresh, healthy skin beneath.

Pre-Treatment Advice for Ephelides (Freckles)

To ensure the safest procedure and the best possible cosmetic outcome, it is important to prepare the skin correctly prior to treatment. Following these guidelines will help reduce the risk of irritation, pigmentation changes, and delayed healing.

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Sun-exposed or tanned skin increases the risk of post-treatment pigmentation.

  • Discontinue active skincare products (such as retinoids, acids, exfoliants, and vitamin A derivatives) on the treatment area 5–7 days prior to your appointment.

  • Do not apply fake tan or tinted skincare products to the area being treated.

  • Ensure the skin is clean, dry, and free from makeup, creams, or oils on the day of treatment.

  • Do not pick, scratch, or irritate the lesion before your appointment.

  • Inform your practitioner of any medical conditions, recent skin treatments, or medications that may affect healing.

  • If you have a history of hyperpigmentation, keloid scarring, or sensitive skin, please disclose this during your consultation.

A full clinical assessment will be carried out before treatment to confirm suitability and ensure the lesion is benign and appropriate for cryotherapy.
