Dermatofibroma

What Is Dermatofibroma?

Dermatofibroma is a benign fibrous nodule commonly found on the legs. These lesions develop due to an abnormal proliferation of fibroblasts, and may involve histiocytes as a reaction to minor skin injuries such as insect bites, splinters, or thorns.

Dermatofibromas often resemble slightly raised moles and can vary in colour, appearing skin-toned, pink, or brown. They are generally harmless, though some patients seek removal for cosmetic reasons or discomfort.

Dermatofibroma Treatment Procedure

Dermatofibromas must only be treated by a medically qualified practitioner. The lesion is treated with a direct cryotherapy application, holding the device approximately 4 mm above the skin at a 90° angle.

A gentle white frost forms evenly over the lesion, indicating effective freezing. Darker dermatofibromas may darken immediately following treatment. After the first freeze, the tissue is allowed to thaw for 30 seconds before a second freeze is applied. Mild redness may appear as part of the normal inflammatory response.

Dermatofibromas typically resolve within 14 days, revealing smooth, healthy skin underneath.
