Warts are small, hardened skin growths caused by an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are generally harmless and often painless, although some types can cause discomfort depending on their location.
Warts develop when the virus enters the skin through small cuts or breaks, leading to an overgrowth of skin cells. Different types of warts can appear on different areas of the body and vary in shape, size, and texture.
Warts are treated using controlled cryotherapy, where the lesion is frozen with precise circular movements from approximately 4 mm above the skin. The applicator is held at a 90-degree angle, allowing an even freeze across the entire wart.
A light white frost forms over the lesion, followed by a mild raised blister, which indicates effective treatment. After the initial freeze, the tissue is allowed to thaw for around 30 seconds before a second freeze is applied. As the skin rewarms, the area may appear red due to a natural inflammatory response.
Most warts resolve within 14 days of treatment. More stubborn plantar or mosaic warts may require follow-up sessions. In some cases, treatment is carried out in up to three sessions spaced one week apart, followed by a healing period to assess clearance. The appearance of small black dots within the wart is a positive sign that the lesion is breaking down and will gradually disappear over the following weeks.
Viral lesions such as warts and verrucae can be more challenging to treat, as both the lesion and the underlying virus are involved. Preparing the area before your appointment can significantly improve treatment effectiveness.
In the days leading up to treatment, softening the skin allows the cryotherapy to penetrate more effectively. To prepare the lesion:
Soak the area in warm, soapy water for 20 minutes
Gently rub the surface using a pumice stone or emery board to roughen the skin
Dispose of the pumice stone or file after use
Avoid scrubbing too hard or causing soreness
If bleeding occurs, stop immediately. The aim is not to create a wound, but to gently prepare the skin so the treatment can work more effectively.
