Actinic keratosis is a rough, thickened, scaly patch of skin that develops as a result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These lesions appear exclusively on sun-exposed areas of the body, most commonly the scalp, forehead, nose, ears, and hands.
Actinic keratoses often have a sandpaper-like texture and a crusty or flaky surface. Their colour can vary and may appear yellow, red, pink, or brown. They are most frequently seen in later adulthood, particularly in individuals with lighter skin types (early Fitzpatrick Skin Types), and are more common in men due to cumulative sun exposure over time.
Importantly, actinic keratoses are considered pre-cancerous lesions. If left untreated, up to 20% may progress into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). For this reason, these lesions must only be assessed and treated by a qualified medical practitioner following appropriate clinical evaluation.
Actinic keratoses must only be treated by a medically qualified practitioner due to their pre-cancerous nature. A full clinical assessment is carried out prior to treatment to confirm suitability and ensure patient safety. The lesion is treated using a controlled cryotherapy application, delivered with precision from approximately 4mm above the skin. The applicator is held at a 90-degree angle, allowing targeted delivery while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. A light, even white frost forms across the lesion, followed by a subtle glossy appearance, indicating effective freezing.Treatment is performed in two freeze cycles, separated by a short thawing period of around 30 seconds. Immediately after treatment, the area may appear reddened, reflecting a normal inflammatory response caused by microscopic changes within the tissue.
